Phenotyping includes analysis of certain observable characteristics of an individual, such as morphology, biochemical properties, behavior etc. Typical characteristics of mice are listed e.g. in the Mouse Phenome Database. In Finland, a distributed Finnish mouse phenotyping platform will be built. The following centers and facilities provide services and analyses as well as collaborative base:
- Neurophenotyping Center (NCP)
- Biocenter Oulu
- BioCity Turku - Turku Center for Disease Modeling (TCDM)
- University of Helsinki - Finnish Centre for Laboratory Animal Pathology (PCLAP), University of Helsinki
- Search facility for expertise and services.
The Phenomefrontier Project aims to provide a European platform offering access to comprehensive systemic phenotyping comprising several disease areas to every laboratory. Systemic phenotype analysis has set the new standard. It allows to unravel all facets of complex mouse mutant phenotypes.
The International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC) comprises a group of major mouse genetics research institutions along with national funding organisations formed to address the challenge of developing an encyclopedia of mammalian gene function.
